Acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph has set the record straight following widespread social media debate regarding his recent decision to walk away from a major Bollywood project. The controversy began after the director revealed in an interview that he stepped down from his proposed Hindi directorial debut featuring Ayushmann Khurrana after the production house referred to Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal as a secondary artist. As speculation mounted online and some fans mistakenly assumed that Ayushmann Khurrana was responsible for the dismissive remark, Jude Anthany Joseph shared a warm photograph alongside the Bollywood star on social media to clarify that the actor had absolutely no role in the dispute and was completely blameless in the matter.
Elaborating on the incident that led to the film being shelved, Jude explained that he had written a script specifically suited for a Hindi feature film and chosen to collaborate with Ayushmann Khurrana despite receiving pitch offers from multiple regional film industries. The story included a significant central character created specifically with Mohanlal in mind, and Jude insisted that the producers formally confirm Mohanlal’s casting before finalizing the full screenplay. However, the production house responded by stating that they would only evaluate secondary artists after approving the complete script first. Deeply offended by the term secondary artist being used for a five-time National Award-winning veteran like Mohanlal, the director immediately returned his advance payment, involved his legal counsel, signed a non-disclosure agreement, and officially withdrew from the project.
Clearing up the public misunderstanding, Jude highlighted that Ayushmann Khurrana was actually thrilled about the narrative and was genuinely excited at the prospect of sharing screen space with Mohanlal. He emphasized that the problematic terminology came strictly from the project’s production executives during business discussions and had nothing to do with the actor himself. Appreciating the director’s gesture, Ayushmann responded to the post by expressing his admiration for Jude’s filmmaking, while reaffirming his deep reverence for Mohanlal as a legendary icon of Indian cinema and sharing his hope to collaborate with both artists in the near future.
