‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna did not endorse infidelity’: Karan Johar recalls a couple walked out midway during the show

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently took a walk down memory lane to reflect on his 2006 directorial venture Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which completes two decades of its release. Known for making grand family dramas filled with happiness, music, and traditional values, the director stepped into uncharted territory with this project by exploring the complex themes of unfulfilling marriages and extramarital affairs. Revisitng the intense reactions the movie received back then, Karan shared how the public response was heavily divided, with some calling it his bravest work while others accused him of promoting anti-traditional values and glorifying infidelity.
Reflecting on the polarising feedback, the director clarified that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was never intended to endorse infidelity or advocate for breaking marital vows. He explained that his primary goal was to portray the delicate and painful reality of how stepping outside a marriage in search of love or passion can ultimately shatter families and disrupt personal foundations. While acknowledging that the movie had its fair share of cinematic flaws, including an overly lavish scale and lengthy music sequences inserted to suit mainstream expectations, Karan maintained that the story’s core emotional intent remained authentic and honest.
To highlight how unprepared audiences were for the narrative shift, Karan shared a specific memory from a preview screening held right before the official theatrical release. He recalled sitting directly behind a traditionally dressed middle-aged couple who appeared visibly uneasy while munching on their popcorn. During a pivotal scene where the central characters played by Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji surrender to their mutual feelings, the woman was so taken aback that she dropped her popcorn in shock. Her husband initially reassured her in Gujarati that it must be a dream sequence, but the moment he realized it was real, he angrily insisted they leave the auditorium immediately, leaving Karan feeling disheartened as he watched them walk out.
The drama did not end inside the theatre, as Karan encountered several other confrontational moments immediately after the show ended. He recounted being approached in the lobby by an upset mother alongside her crying daughter. The mother confronted him furiously, explaining that she had brought her daughter to watch a wholesome family entertainer on the very day of her divorce, only to be shocked by the movie’s heavy plot. Karan admitted he feared the interaction might turn physical and quickly walked away, only to face more resentful glances from surrounding moviegoers. In another surprising incident weeks later, a woman in an airport lounge confessed to him that she secretly loved the film but lied to her husband about hating it just to avoid difficult questions about her preferences.
Despite the initial backlash and intense debates surrounding its theme, Karan noted that time has significantly altered how people view the drama. Over the last twenty years, many viewers who originally disliked or felt disconnected from the movie have approached him to admit that they understand its nuanced portrayal of human relationships much better today. He reflected on how life experience often brings clarity to questions people once resisted, noting that modern audiences are increasingly willing to view relationship conflicts through a grey lens rather than reducing complex situations to simple right and wrong binaries.
