Popular Tamil independent musician and activist Arivu, also known as Therukural Arivu, was briefly detained by the Chennai City Police after staging a surprise protest near the Tamil Nadu Secretariat. The artist, accompanied by a small group of supporters, gathered in front of the high-security premises to voice strong opposition against the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test and condemn the recent police violence inflicted on student demonstrators in New Delhi. Raising slogans demanding an immediate end to force against young protesters and advocating for the complete abolition of entrance exams, Arivu was swiftly taken into custody by police officers on scene as public demonstrations are prohibited in the Secretariat zone.

Following his brief detention and release, widespread media speculation emerged suggesting that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had invited the rapper to his official chamber inside the Secretariat for a private discussion. To set the record straight and clear up misinformation circulating across news platforms, Arivu issued a detailed clarification statement on his official social media handles. In his post, the Enjoy Enjaami singer explicitly clarified that while he did visit the Secretariat premises following the incident, he met with Public Works and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna rather than the Chief Minister himself. Arivu emphasized that during his meeting with the minister, he firmly conveyed that using physical force against peacefully protesting students goes against the core spirit of a democratic society.

Detailing the primary motivation behind his public demonstration, Arivu shared that his action was a direct response to the ongoing nationwide student movement against examination irregularities and paper leak allegations. He noted that the national entrance exam has created an atmosphere of intense fear, anxiety, and mental stress among young aspirants, leading to tragic losses of student lives over recent years. Urging both the Union Government to stop police crackdowns on student agitators in Delhi and the Tamil Nadu State Government to intensify its legal and administrative efforts toward scrapping NEET entirely, the rapper reiterated his complete solidarity with student groups fighting for educational fairness and transparency.

The sudden detention of the prominent independent voice also triggered sharp political reactions across Tamil Nadu, with opposition leaders questioning the police action against a peaceful cultural figure. Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin criticized the state administration for attempting to suppress voices raised against examination discrepancies, stating that Arivu’s intervention reflected the collective concerns of millions of students across the country. As the video of Arivu’s detention and his subsequent clarification continue to trend online, fans and civil rights activists have commended the artist for utilizing his platform to stand by student rights during a critical national debate.
