The true crime genre has seen some deeply unsettling stories, but Netflix’s documentary A Child of My Own brings to light a case that leaves viewers completely stunned. At the center of this unbelievable true story is Eleonor Alejandra Marin Mendoza, affectionately known as Ale, whose desperate desire to become a mother spiraled into an elaborate web of deception and ultimately a shocking hospital kidnapping. Married at just seventeen to Arturo Calderon Gamino, Ale faced intense societal and familial pressure to have children in Mexico. After enduring three devastating miscarriages, the emotional toll and fear of disappointing her husband and in-laws drove her to hide her third loss in 2008. What followed was a carefully orchestrated charade where Ale intentionally gained weight, forged ultrasound scans using her administrative access at a Mexico City hospital, and led her entire family to believe she was expecting a full-term baby.
As her supposed due date approached in June 2009, Ale executed a chilling plan to turn her fake pregnancy into reality. Posing as a social worker inside the Hospital General de Mexico, she targeted Mayra Navarro, a young mother who had just given birth. While Mayra stepped away to provide a routine urine sample, Ale abducted the newborn girl, concealed her inside a large gift bag, and walked out of the facility, as captured on hospital security cameras. She then met her husband, presenting the baby as their newborn daughter. However, the deceptive plot unravelled in just eight hours when police tracked the couple to a nearby hotel after finding Ale’s forgotten ID badge in the hospital room. While Ale claimed she had made a prior adoption agreement with Mayra, evidence proved there was no such deal, leading to her conviction and a sentence of over thirteen years in prison. Her husband spent two and a half years behind bars before being completely acquitted of any involvement, as authorities confirmed he was entirely unaware of the deception.
Today, Eleonor Alejandra Marin Mendoza is out of prison and living as a free woman in Mexico following her release after serving her full sentence. During her time behind bars, she underwent significant reflection, admitting in the documentary that her intense desire for motherhood was fueled by a need to please others rather than her own authentic wishes. Remarkably, after her release, Ale reconciled with her husband Arturo, who had welcomed a son with another partner during their time apart. Today, the couple is back together, and Ale actively helps raise Arturo’s young son while choosing to embrace a life focused beyond the pressures of biological motherhood. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Maite Alberdi, A Child of My Own offers a gripping look into the devastating impact of societal expectations and one woman’s journey through crime, punishment, and eventual self-acceptance.
