After four decades of a multifaceted career spanning films television and theatre veteran actor Shekhar Suman has embarked on a new mission: shaping the next generation of Indian talent. On April 22 2026 Suman officially announced the launch of the Shekhar Suman Film Academy (SSFA) in Mumbai an institute he describes as a “modern creative ecosystem” rather than a traditional school.
The academy aims to move away from rigid formula-driven teaching methods focusing instead on immersive learning that prepares actors for the demands of the digital age and global cinema.
At the heart of SSFA is an intensive three-month acting programme that has been personally designed and curated by Shekhar Suman himself. Unlike many institutions where founders remain distant figures Suman plans to be closely involved in the day-to-day training and conduct several core sessions.
“This academy is not just an institution; it is a very personal way of giving back to the craft that has given me everything” Suman stated during the launch. “Over the years acting has taught me discipline imagination and the importance of truth in performance. I hope to pass that learning forward.”
The academy’s syllabus is designed to be comprehensive covering technical skills alongside emotional development. Key highlights of the programme include:
The Linklater Voice Method: A specialized technique to help actors find their natural voice and improve speech.
Emotional Access & Body Awareness: Training focused on breaking down internal barriers to deliver more authentic performances.
On-Set Discipline: Preparing students for the professional environment of a modern film set including camera readiness and film language.
Capstone Project: The programme culminates in a student film ensuring every participant leaves with practical hands-on experience and footage for their professional reel.
While the academy is launching with a focus on acting Suman’s vision for SSFA is much broader. The institute backed by GBM Studios plans to gradually introduce courses in screenwriting direction cinematography music production and post-production.
SSFA has intentionally kept its entry process accessible to encourage raw talent. There is no requirement for prior formal training; instead applicants are asked to undergo a basic self-audition test to demonstrate their potential and passion for the craft.
The launch comes at a time when the Indian entertainment industry is seeing a massive surge in demand for trained professionals across OTT platforms and mainstream cinema. By blending his decades of experience with a contemporary curriculum Shekhar Suman hopes to turn SSFA into a premier hub for “instinctive and aware” performers. To
